Get rid of fear of public speaking Dressing for success

In this article we will discuss how the way you look can receive dramatically affect the way your voice and can influence the fear of speaking in public.

First, how to dress when you give a presentation? Of course, if you ask 10 different public speaker, you will probably get 10 different answers. Some speakers felt that you should dress professionally for each presentation - that is, a jacket and tie for men and a dress ordress for women. Other speakers find medical professional that creates distance between the speaker in the audience, so they prefer more casual dress - male speakers will be a khaki shirt and, sometimes true, while the female speaker will be a nice shirt and pants.

The question of truth is that both are equal. What is important here to know what kind of public speaking, and appropriate clothing. Remember in section 3, when we talked about knowing yourpublic and the environment? If you have already completed this step before a podium presentation, then you already know a bit 'of your audience. And what we know affect how you should dress for that particular audience.

For example, if you talk to a group of university students, it is probably good for casual wear. Again, if I say "dress casually," what I mean is "business casual". We must not forget that ifIt is a discourse, you are there to have fun and relieve the public, but you are doing business - the activity to give your presentation.

I stress this point because there are few public figures who believe that in these situations, they can get everything they want, such as T-shirt and blue jeans wear. Well, in some cases, it is probably true that you get permission for you to wear anything, but if you show up in a T-shirt and a pairblue jeans, do not count on being recalled to another presentation.

Get Rid of Public Speaking Fear by Dressing For Success

First of all, how should you dress when you're giving a presentation? Of course, if you ask 10 different public speakers, you'll probably get 10 different answers. Some speakers feel that you should dress professionally for every presentation - that is, a suit and tie for men, and a business suit or dress for women. Other speakers feel that dressing professionally creates distance between the speaker in the audience, and so they prefer to dress more casually - male speakers will sometimes where a dress shirt and khakis, while female speakers will wear a nice blouse and dress slacks.

The truth matter is, both are right. What is important here is to know what kind of audience you are speaking to, and dress appropriately. Remember in section 3, when we talked about knowing your audience and your environment? If you have already completed this step before taking the stage to give a presentation, then you should already know a little bit about your audience. And what you know will impact how you should dress for that particular audience.

For example, if you are speaking to a group of college students at a university, it is probably okay to dress casually. Again, when I say "dressing casually", what I mean is "business casual". You have to remember that if you are giving a speech, you are there to have fun and enlighten your audience, but you are also there to conduct business - the business of giving your presentation.

I stress this point because there are some public speakers that feel that in these situations, they are permitted to wear anything that they please, such as Tshirts and blue jeans. Well, in some cases, it's probably true that you will be permitted to wear anything you please, but if you show up in a T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans, don't count on being called back to give another presentation.

Fear of Public Speaking - 10 Tips For Success

A great public speaking statistic was once made on national TV by Jerry Seinfeld, from the TV show Seinfeld, who found a poll that said that the number one fear for Americans was public speaking. Death was at number five. With this he joked that "...at a funeral, people are five times more likely to want to be in the casket than giving the eulogy."

Now forgiving the statistical error Jerry made, public speaking is actually ranked at the top fear of many people, Americans included. From my own personal history, as well as some of the many tips I was able to find online, here are 10 tips for eliminating public speaking fears.

1. Practice right before you go to bed. My best tip to myself by far. Trying to memorize and practice what I have to say right before I go to bed really helps. On a scientific level, your brain works at night and whatever you process last (right before bedtime) sub-consciously becomes more familiar to you the next day! This tip has helped me tremendously, especially for presentations.

2. Be prepared. I envy people who can go up and stir the crowd up without any practice beforehand. But until I get there, knowing the material and speaking with authority on that particular subjects projects confidence, which in turn makes you less nervous while your up on center stage.

3. Use bullet points and do not memorize word for word. If you try to memorize your entire speech or presentation, that will make you more nervous! Instead focusing on memorizing bullet points has helped me since I can be a little more spontaneous, but at the same time, give me direction whenever I feel lost. Trying to memorize what you have to say word for word just makes you think more about what you have to say, which puts more pressure on yourself.

4. As I saw on a shampoo commercial where a guy tells his nervous professor to just imagine him naked to take away his fear of speaking, realize this: whoever your audience is, they want you to succeed. Even if you are very nervous, if you just stand tall you will look 90% confident. The fast heart beat, butterflies, and sweaty palms can't be seen by the audience. In fact, they want to hear a good presentation, and most times, they will like you no matter what.

5. Smile. Smiling makes you happier and makes you more confident. Smile and try to gaze for familiar faces. This allows you to make a positive connection with your audience and takes your mind of of the "I can't do this" thoughts.

6. Be enthusiastic. Even if its a boring business meeting or a boring school presentation, saying your part with fake enthusiasm will rub off...to yourself! Its like smiling except it you can do it for the entire duration.

7. Eat a lot of yogurt and nuts. Some natural chemical inside yogurts and nuts helps to calm you down. I find this works better than a glass of water, and just the fact of me eating it makes me psychologically more confident in myself.

8. Breathe. But don't just breathe, breathe until your lungs are full. Make sure to get enough oxygen inside of you just in case you run into the good old shortness of breath. Rapid breathing is one of my main problems when I am in a public speaking setting, so I always make sure to take a couple big breaths right before I start talking.

9. Project a success image into your head right before you begin talking. I usually like to project myself confidently presenting to my audience, and when the time comes for me to begin, I will follow my projections to a T.

10. As the famous A.I. once said, "Practice? Practice? You wanna talk about Practice?" Yes, practice by yourself talking into an imaginary audience, practice to your roommates, your parents, siblings, friends, or even your dog. Practice puts the motion inside your brain, and when the actual time for your speech comes, your brain will already know what to say.

Of course, the best way to overcome your fear of public speaking is through public speaking classes. It is pretty much practice, just in a real setting. There are also many different self-help programs that aim to give you confidence and help you develop techniques to overcome anxiety and panic.

Public Speaking: Your Way To Success

The fear of public speaking is one of the worst phobias to suffer at the hands of - if not the worst! Sufferers can be almost paralyzed with the fear in some cases. In my clinic and via my products, I help hundreds of people over each and every year to control their fear and actually begin to enjoy the art of public speaking.

To get you off to a flying start though I have included a few tips that I give to my clients that you maybe able to use to alleviate your fear somewhat. Here they are:

1. Understand that up to 90% of the nerves that you feel don't actually show! You will always feel worse than you look and there is a very good reason for this. When you feel nervous it is because you body/brain is trying to tell you that maybe this is not such a good idea. In most cases you will be the only one actually picking up on this.

2. Try to pause and breathe regularly. We do this naturally in conversation and doing it while speaking publicly will help you to remain calm and stop you from talking too fast.

3. Never memorize a talk word for word - this will only confuse you more if you lose your place. Instead have notes and pointers that you have memorized. Have these with you so that you can refer back if you get lost.

4. Always speak on things that you are an expert on. This way you will nearly always know more about the subject than your audience. This is a real confidence boost.

5. In the days that are leading up to your talk - When you feel nervous - spend some time feeling positive. You see, it is actually the lead up to a presentation that makes most people nervous. By concentrating hard on the positives as well as the negatives it allows those bad thoughts running through your head to have another more positive outcome. This is in fact the most important as if you can change that dread to positively then you at 90% of the way to success.

So there you have it - my top tips! Remember that once you get up there you notice that it is not as bad as you thought it would be. And once you get a little bit of belief in your abilities then you will soon be on the track to success.
