Public Speaking - Overcoming Fear by Questioning the Audience

Stage fright is the term used to describe that tingling, burning, scratching, bubbling, semi-nauseating bubble of fear that attacks you right before you present. It is as natural as flowers in spring time. It is as obvious as white shoes with a dark suit. It is as common as gas pumps at a gas station.

It's also unnecessary.

Involving the audience in your presentation or speech is a great way to eliminate this fear from the beginning. You dictate the mood when addressing an audience. Showing signs of distress will cause your audience to lose interest. An easy way to show comfort is to engage and involve the audience from the word go.

This article will discuss 2 types of questions that will ease your pain.

Broad Questions

Questions are always a good way to start a presentation or speech. Whenever someone hears a question their natural inclination is drop their guard and think of an answer.

Think about this for a second. We've all been in conversations where someone has asked a thought provoking question like:

* What is the meaning of life?

* What will you be doing in 5 or 10 years?

* If you won the lottery what would you do with the money?

* Why do you support the Democrats/Republicans?

* Is green investing a good idea?

Each of these are broad questions with no right or wrong answer. Each and every one of these questions forces you to free your mind and begin to think.

Wouldn't you like an audience of open minded thinkers in your audience?

Direct Questions

The same theory applies to direct questions. Anytime someone is asked a question they begin to think of an answer. Direct questions invoke a stronger response. By answering these questions the right way you can quickly establish rapport with your audience.

The object here is to select someone from the crowd and ask them a question. You don't want to embarrass someone or make them look incompetent. You want to show your audience that you are a warm and knowledgeable person worthy of their attention. If the person is wrong then acknowledge their error and elaborate.

Let's walk through the best way of addressing a question when it is answered incorrectly.

Scenario 1 - The Wrong Way

You: "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?"

Audience Member: "You know, its interesting that you asked me that. I had a tootsie pop yesterday and I counted. The last official lick was 654. So it takes 654 licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop!"

You as the presenter have several options at this point.

You can sound an alarm, scream at the top of your lungs, or display a flashing ride neon sign reading "WRONG". This approach alienates your audience and sends sliding towards the door.

Scenario 2 - The Right Way

You: "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?"

Audience Member: ""You know, its interesting that you asked me that. I had a tootsie pop yesterday and I counted. The last official lick was 654. So it takes 654 licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop!"

You: "That's very scientific and exact. I've never had someone answer that question with such razor sharp precision. I'd love to tell you that you are right but I can't. Think back to the old tootsie pop commercial. The owl proved without a doubt that it takes 3 (and only 3) licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop."

That answer was diplomatic, fun, and informative. It sets the tone for your presentation. If you want your presentation to take a different route then you can answer the question differently. You can choose to be serious, mysterious, fun, intriguing, or scientific. No matter the route you still need to be diplomatic and informative. Do that and the audience becomes your property.

Conclusion

Questions are a fantastic way to drum up interest in what you're saying. Questions force us to think of an answer (right, wrong, or indifferent).

There are 2 ways to use questions as a lever to dilute public speaking fear:

1. Broad- Broad questions are large scale and they involve your entire audience. You ask this type of question to wake up the entire audience and get their gears turning.

2. Direct - Pointed questions are directed at one member in the audience. You ask this type of question when you want to set the tone for what is in store. Answer this question right and the red sea will part.

Don't be afraid to involve your audience when you speak to the public. Getting them involved early is a way to make sure they are interested and engaged. Engaging the audience makes everyone in the room comfortable. When the audience is comfortable you can put your fear to the side and deliver the incredible presentation you were meant to give!

Talking About Social Anxiety Symptoms

People with Social Anxiety can have fears that include, expressing personal opinions, talking to strangers, going to a party, initiating conversation or being assertive. Public speaking is a common one, eating or drinking in front of others, using public restrooms when other people are nearby, talking in meetings or classes or being in public areas such as a shopping mall can cause a whole lot of panic attacks symptoms to surface.

Just because others see you as being withdrawn, unfriendly shy, quiet, nervous, or just not interested in what is going on around you does not mean you are anything like that. It is very hard to be friendly and sociable when you try to talk but fear (anxiety) makes you stutter and stammer out a rush of words that don't make sense. Most people with social anxiety want to be accepted socially and make friends. They want to be involved and engage with others in social interactions. Anxiety sometimes makes them appear to not want or need to be part of the group. Social anxiety symptoms can prevent people from being able to do the things they really want to do. Panic attacks symptoms just from the thought of having to speak in public can include nervousness, excessive sweating, and intense fear, racing heart, dry throat and mouth, trembling, among others.

Getting nervous or self-conscious on occasion is normal, to feel some anxiety at times is normal what is not normal is thinking you are having a heart attack because you are having an anxiety attack. Social anxiety is much more than just shyness or occasional nervousness. The fear of embarrassing yourself is so intense, that you might go to great lengths to avoid situations that could trigger an anxiety attack. Has trying to avoid a social situations like a wedding or company picnic caused you intense worry for days, weeks, or even months before it to the degree that it your disrupts your life. Do you have the extreme fear of being watched or judged by others, especially by people you don't know? Does this cause you to fear that you'll act in ways that will embarrass or humiliate yourself or loved ones? Are you excessively self-consciousness and does the mention of an upcoming social event cause you to feel so much anxiety that you are sick to your stomach?

Lifestyle changes alone are not enough to overcome social anxiety disorder, but they certainly cannot hurt you and they can support your overall treatment progress. Eliminating things like caffeine not only in your coffee but also in chocolate, energy drinks, caffeinated soda, some diet pills and medications. Quitting the nicotine and alcohol as both lead to higher not lower anxiety and help with the pocket book. Getting good nights sleep is also great for attacking anxiety because when you are sleep deprived, you are more vulnerable to anxiety attacks.

The best treatment approach for social anxiety disorder varies from person to person. You may find that self-help strategies are enough to ease your anxiety symptoms, or you may need professional help as well, such as therapy or medication. Attacking anxiety is a difficult but not impossible task.
The great news is that many effective treatments and self-help strategies can help you overcome the symptoms of social anxiety and reclaim your life.

Exceptional Public Speaking - How to Ignite an Audience

One of the most thrilling, challenging (and for many people) frightening opportunities is that of public speaking. Whether your job requires it, or you find yourself in a position where you have to give a public presentation, you may be overcome with nerves at the thought of standing in front of a group.

It's normal to be scared. After all, most people in your audience would be just as nervous in front of a crowd. The great Jerry Seinfeld noted that public speaking is the #1 fear among people, higher than the fear of death. As he creatively put it, "that means more people would rather be in the casket than actually giving the eulogy."   If this describes you, don't worry. There's hope. You don't have to be a professional speaker to give a good public speech. You can not only survive in giving your talk, but you can thrive in it. Follow these tips and you'll be on your way to not only keeping your audience awake, but you will be able to ignite and move them to action.   Here are some public speaking tips for conquering your fear and becoming an exceptional speaker:

1.   Remember that anything worth doing is worth doing well.  If it's worth your time, and especially if you're getting paid to make the speech, then it is worth doing it well. This is a great life lesson: Do your best, or don't do it at all. Try your hardest. Don't just phone it in. Your audience deserves better. So what's the best way to do your best? Practice! There's an old saying that goes like this: "Practice makes perfect." Wrong! Practice only makes perfect if you know how to practice. So you have to learn how to practice the right way. Read some books on speaking. Take a course (like the one we offer at Inspire Coaching), hire a speaker's coach. Learn how to practice right, and then do it. Know your talk inside and out.

2.    Make sure you know your topic. Even if you don't know everything about your topic, you should know enough about it to make it through your speech. But not only that, do your best to learn everything you can about that topic. If you have a Q & A time, or if people approach you afterward to ask questions, you will want to know more than what was in your talk. If not, you will regret it, and you will look like a phony. So do your homework, and know your topic.

3.    Speak with enthusiasm.  Passion is a powerful thing, and when we let it show (notably as enthusiasm), great things can happen. An enthusiastic speaker is compelling. You can have nothing to say, but if you say it with great enthusiasm, you can keep your audience's attention. No one wants to listen to a "ho-hum", apathetic, monotone speaker. But we will listen to an enthusiastic speaker.

Not convinced? Consider our newly elected President. Whether or not you like or support President Obama, his passionate and enthusiastic style of speaking captivated people and consequently...led to his election. (If you go back and track Obama's rise in the democratic race, the moments that his popularity grew were times immediately following major speeches he made! That's not a coincidence.)

4.    Maintain eye contact. Glance around the room and use the 3-second rule while looking directly into someone's eyes. Doing so will make your audience feelmore involved.

5.    Use humor in your speech. Even if you're speaking about a dry topic, draw something funny into your speech. Not all of us are born comedians, so don't go overboard on this if it isn't natural. Why is this important? Laughter does a few things for us:

It relaxes us (speaker and audience)
It brings people back to a point of attention. Zig Ziglar, who gets paid thousands of dollars per speech, intentionally plans humor into his speech in certain spots because he knows the power humor has on a presentation.  If you can make your audience laugh, you can make them listen!
It can be used to make points memorable.  Again, what makes us laugh makes us listen.

6.    Use personal stories to illustrate your point. Personal stories can be used to drive home your point. Stories compel people to listen, and are very effective at moving people to action. Using personal stories is one of the most powerful ways to ignite your audience. They may never remember your point, but they will remember the story. Anything that moves you emotionally (makes you cry, makes you angry, makes you think, makes you laugh, etc.) can be used. Search your life and stay on the lookout for these illustrations because they are like gold.

7.    Don't be afraid of silence. Pause periodically. This gives your audience time to reflect and think about what you have said. A speak who is not afraid of short moments of silence will recognize the power of silence. When used properly, planned pauses can create dramatic moments.

8.    Memorize your speech.  Delivering your talk without notes makes you look more professional and shows your audience that you have prepared. It also gives you more freedom to look into the eyes of your audience. But the most important thing is that it actually can help you speak with more conviction. Why? Because you have already prepared what to say, you can now have the freedom to say it without looking down at your notes. It actually makes you better because when you know you'll be speaking without notes, you'll be more likely to prepare yourself well. Plus, it makes it easier to keep your audience's attention if you're speaking without notes.

9.    Own the stage. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, so don't worry about being perfect.  Focus on speaking with great enthusiasm and getting your point across. When you're the speaker, you have to own the stage. Realize that this is where you belong and you are the right person for this moment.

When I first began speaking around the country, I was asked to go speak at a couple of public high school assemblies. I was nervous, having not done this before. I spoke to one of my mentors, a speaker named, Lori Salierno. I told her I was nervous about this, and she had great advice for me: "Have fun. They're just kids that need the message you're bringing. You're the right one for this job." So, that is what I did. I had a blast, gave it my best, and spoke with a lot of energy.

10. Use handouts when appropriate. This serves two main purposes: First, it helps your audience follow along and pay attention better. Second, it gives them something to take home with them for later use or reference. (Here's a tip: Put your name and contact information on the handout in case they want to use you again, or in case they want to tell someone else about you.)

11. Keep your speech within the time you have been given. Event planners will love you for this, especially if they are running behind schedule. Know how much time you have to speak, and stop when your time is up. When you practice ahead of time, you'll get good at keeping within the time limits.

12. Start strong. You only have a few moments to grab your audience and convince them that they need to listen to you. Before you've made your first point, your audience is already determining whether or not they're going to give you their attention. With this knowledge at your disposal, use it to captivate them from the first word. Don't start off with some joke your uncle told you, find a creative, dramatic or energetic way to capture their attention from the start.

13. Take a class or find a coach. Always be learning and growing. Stretch yourself. Take a class on speaking, or find a speaker's coach who can help you grow into the communicator you need to be.

Zero to Hero in Public Speaking

If you have read my other articles you know that I personally, don't believe in instant solutions with concern to solving the fear of public speaking. Neither with concern to leveraging your public speaking skills.

I am usually push toward holistic understanding of things, and try to present balanced approach that is flexible enough to collect knowledge of various sources, and integrate it together in order to create a broader perspective of reality and at the same time adjustable to one person style and needs.

Each person should find his or her "unique solution" and approach that will work for you, may not for work for your friend and vice versa. Yet, the common factor to my opinion is that once you find the method that you can "bind" with, a hard work and commitment is required.

Solving a problem start by taking responsibility. Solving the solution may take three days or three years. Forget about one measure for all. There is no such thing with relating to stress anxiety or fears, or human behavior in general.

If you have a strong desire to improve your public speaking skills - overcome stage fright, deliver high impact presentations that move your audience and convey your ideas more effectively, then keep reading my post.

But if you want to stay in the comfort zone, not taking responsibility for a change in your life, not willing to search for the approach that is suitable for you and continue walking in the shadows of other people then it will be perfectly fine to hit the BACK button.

You can probably identify yourself to any of these scenarios:

* You are afraid to speak up.

* Your job requires you to speak to many people.

* You are tired of being outshine by people who seem to have the natural talent of "promoting ideas" by presenting in public, and accordingly get a job promotion.

* You are in business that requires dealing with people and afraid of dealing with people face-to-face!

* You don't enjoy yourself at parties because you can't converse well.

* Your opinions are not taken seriously because you are timid.

Lets see what are the costs:

distorted public perception, losing business opportunities, missed friendships and relationships, low self-esteem, scarify job promotion and therefore earnings.

Two words: start doing!

If you are a natural autodidact you may compulsively start searching now all around the Internet, for solutions and approaches that may help you solve your problem. You will certainly get a LOTS OF knowledge.

A clever autodidact, on the other end know that sometimes, it is better to spend some money for taking a course that guide you step by step across the various aspects of an issue. First you may find the course to provide a suitable solution for you, second - focus!, focus! and again focus!. Being able to focus is a symptom of taking responsibility (wow - good symptoms exist too!). Third - you are being guided in a field of knowledge, that someone else is knowing better then you.

Is Your Fear of Public Speaking Real Or Imaginary?

Having recently read an article on the imaginary fear of public speaking, I beg to differ. Nervousness at the lectern is not imaginary. It is real. It is palpable. The question is whether you are willing to take control of that fear and allow it to work in your favor or whether you will allow your fear to remain in control?

Because public speaking is a live venue, you have every reason be exhibit trepidation, anxiety, stress, sweaty palms, nervous jitters, racing heart beat, nausea or whatever else afflicts you at the prospect of standing and speaking in front of an audience. These symptoms are real, not imaginary.

When you stand at that lectern and address your audience, you have no idea how your audience will respond to you. You don't know how you will sound; you don't know how well your delivery will flow. That, in a nutshell, is a reason for fear. (Admittedly speeches that are read are a bit easier to gauge in that respect than the presentation.)

While others may offer tips and tricks on eliminating, abolishing, and ending your nervousness, I have found that if you allow for your nervousness and embrace the adrenaline rush, you can use it to your advantage. The secret is learning how to harness that nervous energy.

When you deliver your speech or presentation, you will have only one chance to make a good impression. That is a frightening thought. But if you do your homework and know your material, you have just taken the first step in dealing with your fear.

Your next step is to practice your material over and over again until you are comfortable with your delivery skills. By recording yourself and studying the playback, you can honestly judge your strengths and weaknesses and work on improving that which you don't like about your delivery.

In recording yourself, however, practice delivering your speech or presentation just as if you were having a conversation in your living room. Good delivery skills, just like good conversational skills, involve making eye contact with your audience. It also means speaking with color, with life, and with emotion.

Throughout your practice and eventual delivery of your material, concentrate on your breathing. The last thing we think to do in public speaking is to breathe when, in fact, it should be the first thing we do.

If you discover the tremendous benefits of deep, supported breathing, known as diaphragmatic breathing, then breathlessness will not be a problem - your speed will be in control - and your pitch will not continue to rise with each and every word.

All great athletes, performers, musicians and even public speakers are nervous. In each case, their livelihood is dependent on how well they perform. If you think they are not nervous, then you are wrong. The difference between you and them, however, is that they allow their nervousness, their fear, or their trepidation to get them through their performance with success. They do not allow it to stop them...they make it work for them.

Your fear is not imaginary. It is a reality. Accept the reality, take control of the fear, and allow it to work for you, not against you!

TSA Initiates Witch Hunt Against Air Marshal Whistleblowers

(CNN) -- Federal officers charged with keeping terrorists off planes are now searching their own ranks for staff who told CNN that few flights were protected by air marshals. Iraq war veteran Jeff Denning says a TSA investigator called him trying to find out if he spoke to CNN. Iraq war veteran Jeff Denning says a TSA investigator called him trying to find out if he spoke to CNN. The Transportation Security Administration rejected as a "myth" CNN's report that less than 1 percent of the nation's daily flights carry armed federal air marshals. Now the agency is conducting an investigation into who talked to CNN and who encouraged other agents to do the same. A spokesman for the TSA confirmed the investigation. Spokesman Christopher White said a TSA investigator is looking into the "possible unauthorized release of sensitive and classified information to the news media by covered parties." "As part of this ongoing investigation, several individuals, both current and former employees, have been contacted as is typical in any investigation," he said in an e-mail to CNN. CNN spoke to more than a dozen current and former air marshals, pilots and federal law enforcement officials for the report, which aired in March on "Anderson Cooper 360º." Repeatedly, the sources told CNN that as few as 280 of an estimated 28000 daily flights had armed federal air marshals aboard. That amounts to less than 1 percent. "That number is absolutely wrong," said Kip Hawley, the head of the agency ...

Scared Of Public Speaking? Here's How To Eliminate Your Fear Of Public Speaking Today

If you are scared of public speaking, there is probably a rational explanation for the reason why you might have developed this phobia or anxiety.

Often it can be because of our own self confidence, the fear of something going wrong and making us look stupid or unprofessional. This can often be traced back to childhood pressures to speak in front of the class, sing a song, tell a story or may have even been triggered from recent events where a negative outcome somehow imprinted a continued false expectation of all your future public speaking activity.

The biggest trigger of the fear of public speaking surely lies in our own self critic. We are far too judgemental of ourselves, particularly the bad points.

The truth is that for many of us, public speaking is an essential part of our lives. Whether we are selling, presenting, doing a wedding speech or hosting a seminar, our ability to perform well with our public speaking is paramount to our success and our well being.

Public speaking can cause much unwanted stress, loss of control and further rooted anxiety if not handled and mastered early on. Luckily, there are proven ways to totally transform your public speaking skills so that you can safely and comfortably transform your career and personal life through effective public speaking.

The first step is to develop good content for your public speech. Below are 3 of the many main keys to achieving this, starting from today.

1. Talk with authority

Whether it's a seminar speech or a simple toast, you can develop good public speech content through taking an authority position. Speaking about what you know and love makes the whole task 100 times easier. It doesn't matter what context your speech is in (wedding, toasts, teaching, selling), by applying your passion, experience and knowledge that you know othres will appreciate, you will always have a massive head start over your previous efforts.

2. Story time

Stories are great for two reasons. Firstly, stories are often used in sales to get people "on your side" and become warm and empathetic towards you. Secondly, stories fill a huge chunk of your speech, whilst providing inspirational and heart felt messages to your listeners. Stories, when told well, will capture your audience from the minute you begin speaking. This is because people instinctively want to know the ending. By knowing that people are hanging on your every word, you will feel more at ease when it comes to the crunch time.

3. Practise

As with anything in life, practise allows us to perform better. You will notice a massive difference in your speech performance when you attack it fully prepared. Knowing your material inside out with reduce the anxiety of making a potential mistake, and you will appear more relaxed in the process. When you know your material inside out, you will subconsciously deliver it with "free flowing" style and this allows you to bring out your personality in order to appeal to your audience on a more personal, intimate level.

Cult of Christ

I have interlaced a "how to" video on brainwashing followers to joint a cult with various clips of Christian Evangelist and their followers engaging in similar practices. I hope to demonstrate the dangerous influence Christianity can have on the one's psyche and mental well-being. Of course, I am not equating all forms of Christianity to dangerous cults, like Scientology. Many moderate Christians practice their faith without engaging in any hypnotic mind control techniques like speaking in tongues, chanting, allowing themselves to loose physical control and so on. However, if left unchecked any religion has the potential to corrupt and destroy the lives of its followers, spread falsehoods, and inspire discrimination/hatred of those who do not share similar philosophical beliefs.

GOP Neocon Gatekeepers access is entering tea parties

Why Are Federal Regulated Corporate News Groups like WOWO and WANE TV running Election Debates? This Pat Miller from WOWO radio last week that wouldn't let me ask the Republican Indiana Senator Candidates a question and now this wek the Federal Regulatated MSM Media is Hijacking what once was the Ron Paul revolution and still using fear to sell their failed war of terror and the past terror events as what united the nation and stole our freedoms. They are still using religous extremism to justify envading Iraq for 9/11. The really disturbing thing is how many in the local Glenn Beck 912 group are not afraid to admit their Neocon War Monger Agenda. Rank and file Tea Partiers are, politically speaking, lost at sea in the dead of night, looking for the light of common principles. On land, those manning right-wing lighthouses are broadcasting ideas loaded with hidden motives into this ocean of conservative public opinion. What the Tea Party will become is presently unknown; but those with an agenda will do their best to steer lost boats at sea in their direction, with potentially dangerous consequences. www.countercurrents.org PBN8510IN NEIN Field Reporter

Afraid of Public Speaking? I Was, Here's How I Overcame My Fear of Public Speaking

There is one universal fear, even a terror, almost everyone has. It is public speaking. Here's how I overcame my fear of what is the highest on most people's list of fears.

Public speaking is many peoples biggest fear. It has also been mine. I've done everything to take me out of fear and improve my speaking skills. I joined Toastmasters five times and found it too intimidating for me. Toastmasters is a great organization and has helped many people. But I wasn't ready for Toastmasters.

A class was offered at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living. The flyer read "Does your Delivery Sabotage Your Message?" With so many opportunities coming up for me to speak, this was perfect for me. I signed up and took the class. However, I needed far more than a six week class, but it was a start. The one thing every student in the class had was a fear of public speaking. I took some private lessons from her. She was very encouraging but determined to get the best out of each of us. We all made progress. She was there to support me each time I spoke and at every workshop I gave. What a blessing she has been.

As time for the workshop approached I knew I was well prepared. I went over it again and again. I had all the experiential exercises and hand-outs printed and organized. I wore my power outfit and felt comfortable.

As I began to speak, I looked around the room and realized people were really interested in what I had to say. I could see it in their faces. I felt my tension flow away. I relaxed and spoke from my heart. That was when I realized that when we speak from our heart people listen. That's what they want to hear. When it was over I knew that I had done very well. I walked out of the room feeling confident and powerful. I knew I could do this.

Here's what I learned: Take the fear and turn it into excitement and enthusiasm. Whatever your fear is, do it anyway. What we really are afraid of is that we may humiliate ourselves. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE US FAIL. When fear steps in, do it anyway. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Get excited about it. Build your enthusiasm. Find a supportive coach who will see you through it. Get friends who support you and make them your "cheering squad." See yourself being great. Do it anyway.

I may not be the world's greatest public speaker, not yet. But I do feel more comfortable than I ever have. The more I speak the more at ease and confident I am. You can do it too.

Public Speaking - The First Moment of Fear

You've just been introduced by your host, you've walked up to the front of the room and thanked her or him. You turn and face your audience for the first time to deliver that all-important opening statement. What happens inside your head at that moment?

Does your mind go completely blank? Are you quietly quivering in your shoes, struggling for calm? Are you internally criticizing yourself or your audience somehow? Do you wish you could be anywhere else but there?

What is that "saboteur," that inner critic or negative self-talk that threatens to ruin your performance, saying to you?

Delivering a winning presentation takes a lot of preparation. The last obstacle we all need getting in the way of our success is struggling with our personal saboteurs while we're trying to establish the first connection with our audience. And often, that's the biggest obstacle-- getting over that first moment of fear as we begin our presentations.

The following is a coaching process that addresses the saboteur and sends them away. Remember what happens internally at the outset of your presentation, and answer each of the following questions later, thoroughly, when you're on your own, in writing, or with a coach:

What is the inner voice/saboteur saying exactly?

How would you describe this voice/ saboteur?

Personify the saboteur and identify it a something that is not you or separate from yourself.

What is that saboteur protecting you from?

Why are you making the presentation and why is that important?

Direct the saboteur to go elsewhere!

After completing this process, the next time you find yourself in front of an audience and your saboteur rears its ugly head, you may identify the saboteur for what it is immediately, remember why you're there, and move on to deliver a winning presentation.

Public Speaking Fear - Will They Reject My Expertise?

Fear of rejection sometimes shows up as public speaking anxiety is when you're afraid they'll reject your expertise. You know - those doubts that sound like this:

Who would want to listen to me?
What if I don't sound as good as ___________ (insert other expert's name here)?
I must be kidding myself. Who do I think I am?
Do you realize these are common doubts and fears? Listen closely to successful people, and you'll hear them mention these concerns popping into their minds, too. So you're in good company!

What To Do
Those fears about your expertise don't have to derail you. And they definitely don't have to stop you from speaking up. There are steps you can take to help yourself to move past the fear.

Use the question "Who would want to listen to me?" It's actually a great incentive to craft your talk more carefully. The answer to that question is this: People who think you can solve their problem are the ones who would want to listen. So speak directly to them, and only them. When you're writing your talk or elevator speech or video script, imagine your ideal client sitting across from you. Then write to that person. When you get to speaking this out loud, your passion will shine through because you're addressing your people, your targeted community.

"What if I don't sound as good as WhatsHerName?" It's natural to compare ourselves to others. We all do it. But this particular question is NOT useful. Here's why: You're comparing apples and oranges. You are uniquely you. Your message and the precise way you deliver it is different from everyone else, because you're a different person. So you're going to sound different from her. And that's a good thing.

There are more than enough clients and customers to go around. Always. And you want to connect with the ones who are the right fit for you. That's why it's so important to relax as much as you can so you can just be yourself. And let that unique you shine through to click with your special people.

So keep checking out others in your industry. Learn from what they're doing and how they're doing it. See what you want to try yourself, and what you want to avoid. Maybe you can form partnerships when you see how your offers actually complement each other. But stop comparing yourself, because there's nobody out there just exactly like you. And there are people just waiting to hear what you have to say!

Ridding Fear from Public Speaking

Fear of speaking in public is limiting to one's success
in many ways and can be overcome with just a little work.

You need to feel more comfortable speaking in public because
success often requires speaking up in a business meeting, the
ability to interview well for a promotion or a new job, and the
very important making new and valuable business and social
contacts.

Other advantages to speaking out in public and being more
forthcoming in private communication is people will be more
honest and give you better feedback about yourself and your
ideas. You will then be more willing to explore your ideas.

Soon you'll likely find you develop more self-confidence, which
leads to a stronger self-image. Feeling better about yourself
actually makes you more attractive and interesting to others.
People you've sought very well may find their way to you.

You may then see yourself as more charismatic, even magnetic.
Maybe you won't be asked to run for public office or star in a movie,
but your invitations could easily increase and you'll feel a greater
sense of achievement in your life.

Overcoming fear in any area of life is considered an accomplishment, but
overcoming fear of public speaking for most is thought of as a major
life achievement. So, congratulate yourself!

3 Undeniable Reasons Why Public Speaking Fear is Ridiculous

I'm going to go ahead and apologize now. This article may hurt a few feelings. It may cause people to curse me. It might even cause somebody to throw something. Hopefully, it will inspire some people to trash their fear of public speaking while I'm at it.It's been well documented that the fear of public speaking grips a good number of adults.

Public speaking is often said to rank higher on our list of fears that laying six feet deep in the dirt. Some people draw the analogy of a funeral by saying that most people would rather be in the casket than delivering the eulogy. I don't know about you but I'm on a streak of leaving funerals alive.

Let's dive headfirst into the Top 3 Reasons Why Public Speaking Fear is Ridiculous.

1 - It's Unavoidable

What is that you're saying.

You can avoid public speaking?

You don't have to present ideas if you don't want to?

You hate it so much that the very thought makes your stomach turn so you'll never do it?

OK. You got me. If you prefer to live your entire life in a cave you can avoid it. If robbing yourself of the best life possible is your forte then go for it. If cowering in fear is your preferred plan then have at it. I hope you have fun and I'm glad you raised those concerns.

The story is a little different for the rest of the humans on earth. You know who I'm talking about. I'm talking about those strange people that interact with others. Those crazy people that have careers. Those insane few that attend social events with the intention of (gasp) talking to other people. Those absolutely loony married men and women who are raising a family together.

Those people absolutely can't avoid it.I'd be willing to bet you a pair of my favorite socks that you are one of the 99.9%.

2 - It's Simple

When I was in college there were quite a few classes that I didn't care much for. Computer Science was an annoying class that didn't interest me at all. Calculus struck me as arbitrarily overcomplicated math that someone with too much time on their hands thought up.

As much I as I hated those two they were no comparison for the class I hated the most.

That class was...physics.

I liked the idea of taking a physics class and learning about the world around me. The actual course design was another monster altogether. Every week there were multiple homework assignments due. Each assignment had 8 questions with 4 or 5 sub questions. Every week there was a three hour lab (Did I mention my lab was on Friday?). Once a month we would have an insane test with 8 or 9 questions on it. The room for error on those tests was 2 questions max. After that you could consider the test failed. The material was foreign and poorly explained. If you had any hope of getting a decent grade in the class then you had to commit at least 15 hours to the course each week.

Physics was the bane of my college career because it was unconstitutionally hard, boring, tedious, and time consuming. I won't name my professors because I like to protect the innocent.

Public speaking will never rival physics on the difficulty scale. There are no ballistics, kinematics, kinetics, or gravitational force formulas to memorize and apply. When you're speaking its usually you and 20 or so people in the room. All you have to do is grab their attention, stuff them full of good information, and give them a closing they can't forget.

Which would you rather do?

Calculate the thermodynamic potential of a system.
Convince 20 people that its worth their time to listen to you

I'll take menu option #2 waiter. It looks good from here.

3 - Public Speaking is Harmless

Here's a list of phobias that I agree and sympathize with:

Androphobia - The fear of men (men are silly, insane, immature creatures).
Allodoxaphobia - The fear of opinions (the world would be better off with more facts and fewer opinions).
Caligynephobia - The fear of beautiful women (they can be so harsh when they reject you).
Coprastasophobia - The fear of constipation (constipation isn't fun...not that I would know or anything).
Zemmiphobia - The fear of the great mole rat (never seen one but it sounds mean).

Men, beautiful women, opinions, constipation, and the great mole rat have all caused great pain. Men start wars so that beautiful women will have high opinions of them. Constipation usually puts an end to the war.

The great mole rat just has a reputation of being a mean fellow.

The only thing public speaking has ever hurt is the occasional ego or 2 (other than that its completely harmless).

Conclusion

The fear of public speaking really is ridiculous. Each of us gives some sort of public speech day in and day out. Don't be afraid because you have to stand up in front of a group. Public speaking is an unavoidable, simple, and harmless part of life.

Embrace it as such.

GoldRing GRS33 animated ones Pleiadian Sirian Arcturian Andromedan

That which is known to the Pleiadians, the Sirians, the Arcturians, the Andromedans and the others has come to pass. As the stars move in alignment and the planets move into their changes, all is coming into focus and it is coming quickly. There is a time when you will see the awakening ones, the Shining Ones, coming forth and speaking their truth. In this time of globalization, Jupiter now crosses the right eye of the dragon, Draco. There is dishonor, downfall and the loss of prestige as acumen, the sting of the Scorpion, sharpens. All who have thought that this time would be easy are now becoming understandably concerned with the path of the earth and those upon it. The Heart of Compassion walks out and sees the world in disarray and knows that much is needed to be done before the winds of change blow harder and harder. The Heart opens with great breath and great strength to hold, and bring into alignment, all those who wish to understand and be part of the Higher Light. For in the Higher Light, you are safe and protected from what is to come. After the ides of December, the stinger comes out at the tail of the Scorpion and it is strong and clear and speaks the truth. The aggressions that have been unwarranted are called forth and to be dealt with a swift and strong decision. The point of renunciation comes three days before the sun sets and begins its return before the Winter Solstice. There is a combination of major planetary change and powerful conjunctions that ...

Getting Over Stage Fright - Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking and Performing

How do you feel when you step up to speak or perform? Are you nervous? Worried? Panicked? Feeling dread and terror?

If you are like most people, you likely experience some degree of stage fright, as the fear of public speaking is one of the most common fears people report. While some people have only a mild case of the jitters, many others have a much higher level of performance anxiety.

While preparation and practice can do wonders in helping people feel less anxious when stepping up to speak or perform, I have found this is often not enough to quell the higher level fear and anxiety that so many people feel. For these people, more is needed to help calm the Fight or Flight reaction that gets triggered when they perceive speaking or performing to be such a threat.

I find that a holistic approach is most helpful for those who struggle with stage fright. Below are some ideas you may find useful based on the approach I write about in my book, Getting Over Stage Fright: A New Approach to Resolving Your Fear of Public Speaking and Performing.

BODY: Most people feel very worried about people detecting their symptoms of high anxiety when speaking or performing. The good news is that these symptoms are not as detectable as you may think, though they can certainly be very uncomfortable and unpleasant to bear.

Here are some tips to work on easing your physical symptoms:

1. ACCEPT YOUR ANXIOUS FEELINGS and learn to not be afraid of your fear.

2. BREATHE DEEPLY AND SLOWLY and focus on releasing and relaxing any tension that you are holding in your body.

3. CREATE A BODY POSTURE and facial expression that conveys a relaxed, natural ease and a "Can do" attitude.

MIND: It is important to remember we have a choice in how we think and it is up to us to think in ways that support us rather than undermine us.

Here are some tips to help your mind work for you rather than against you:

1. DIRECT YOUR MIND away from any negative, fear-inducing thoughts and toward more positive, empowering thoughts and images.

2. KEEP A GOOD ATTITUDE throughout this process, no matter how challenging your experience may be.

3. GET PERSPECTIVE on yourself and your situation. Smile and lighten up as you remind yourself you are not giving the State of the Union address nor are you competing in the Olympics.

SPIRIT: Your fear can act as a catalyst for your personal and spiritual growth and lead to many hidden blessings when you approach this challenge in a more conscious and mindful way.

Here are some tips to help you access your spiritual nature:

1. RELAX YOUR NEED FOR CONTROL after doing the prep work. Learn to go with the flow and allow whatever happens to be okay, trusting that things will work out fine.

2. BE A WILLING SPIRIT and let go of any resistance you have to speaking or performing. Do whatever is being asked of you with an open and generous heart.

3. DO NOT MAKE THIS A PROVING GROUND for yourself. Take the focus off yourself, connect deeply with others, and remember, It is not about you!

Albert Einstein once said, "Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them." In order to resolve our fear of public speaking and performing we need to adopt and practice a new approach.

Public Speaking - Tips on How to Master Speaking in Front of an Audience

Many people still fear speaking in public. Even adults that have spoken several times in public still become anxious once they have to face speaking in front of an unfamiliar audience again.

But what can you do to improve your skills? How can you become a better public speaker?

Practicing is Essential

Practice is one of the few things that is truly essential in order to become a better public speaker. Without practice you will never be able to deliver a great presentation.

So go ahead and practice a lot. Use every opportunity to practice when you can. It will ultimately help you to become a better public speaker.

Get a Coach

A coach can be extremely effective in order to get better in public speaking. You can't really rely on yourself to judge how you performed. It will always be subjective and thus will stop you from developing.

In order to get further you need to have a coach. A coach will see things you don't see. And he will truly be able to help you.

Understand Your Audience

Mastering the art of understanding your audience is mastering the art of public speaking. In order to deliver a successful presentation you need to understand what your listeners are all about.

How old are they? What ethnicity do they have? How are they dressed? How do they behave?

All these things will give you clues as to what to expect from the audience. Once you understand them you can refine your speech to win them over.

Develop Your Voice

Developing your voice is an truly important step whenever you speak in front of people. You need to be able to appear confidently and to appear safe. You can achieve both through your voice.

You have to vary your tone in order to successfully deliver speeches. But you also need to use pauses. Stop from time to time to give your listeners some time to think about what you have just said.

Master Body Language

Body language is so important whenever your are in public or talking to other people. Becoming a better public speaker has to do with becoming better at controlling your body language and being able to interpret the body language of others.

Public Speaking Fear

Public speaking fear is one of the foremost common phobias of all. Phobias are irrational fears that may become surprisingly disruptive. Untreated phobias can grow into panic disorder. Panic disorders are characterized by symptoms such as:.

- Racing heart, fast pulse.

- Chest pain or tightness.

- Dizziness.

- Breathing problems.

- Intestinal distress, stomach ache.

- Headaches.

- Sensations of tingling or numbness.

Fear can be a normal response when the threat is real. Fear that interferes with normal life is irrational fear. Public speaking isn't dangerous nonetheless fear of it can be intense. Fear of speaking in public may involve fear of looking or sounding foolish.

Fear of speaking in public hits lots of people. Folks who must speak publicly as part of their profession often feel stress before a speech. Teachers, college instructors, fund raisers, businessmen, sales persons, and politicians all experience fear of speaking in public at some time in their careers. Losing one's voice before a speech is a common occurrence. Physical symptoms can scare individuals out of giving the planned speech.

Self-help methods for managing fear of public speaking are plentiful and easy. Popular ways for managing the fear include:.

- Take time to organize. Write your speech on note cards in advance. Arrange your response to problems in advance. Be ready for common questions and review your topic thoroughly beforehand. Rehearse your responses to anticipated questions.

- Practice as much as you can. Practicing public speaking really does make your speech perfect. Try taping your speech on audio cassette. Review your speech for areas of improvement. Practice your speech in front of a friend or family member.

- Formulate a back-up plan. Have an alternate plan in case something goes wrong. Plan a slide show as a back up, for example. Ask about rescheduling your speech. Having a back-up can keep you from worrying about mishaps so you can focus on giving a good speech.

- Make your audience less intimidating. A selection of strategies will help you do this. Find a face that appears friendly and try talking to only one person. Another technique is to focus just over the heads of your audience Audiences will not know you are not looking them in the eye.

- Relax before the speech. Don't prepare obsessively up till the last minute. Resting right before the speech will boost your confidence more.

Public speaking classes will help a lot if you must give speeches often as part of your job. A 3rd option is to join a "speaking in public" community group like Toastmasters. Create a supportive group of friends who also speak frequently in public.

Once you get past the butterflies in your stomach, you may even begin to enjoy public speaking.
