Stage Fright & Fear of Public Speaking - How to Cure it Right Now

Stage fright is caused by how you hold representations in your mind - a fancy way of saying that whether you know it or not, you're running scary movies in your mind that create fear. One of the most effective public speaking training techniques you can use to get rid of stage fright is what I call "The Hero Process", here are the steps:

1. Identify Your Hero:

Who can you think of that would never have stage fright, not in a million years? Who can you think of that could confidently speak to any size audience? This person may be living or not, real or imaginary, someone you know personally or not. Important: pick a Hero that would not have stage fright, ever.

2. Observe Your Hero:

It doesn't matter if you observe your Hero in your mind, on a video, or in person. What you're looking for here is the outward demonstration of a total lack of stage fright - in other words, how does their face, their voice and their body look when they're calm and confidently speaking to an audience? Make detailed notes about their face voice and body.

3. Become Your Hero:

Emulate and act like your Hero - stand the way s/he would stand. Make your face like their face. Speak the way they would speak. Feel all the feeling of calm confidence they would feel. Try practicing parts of your speech being just like your Hero.

4. Rinse Then Repeat:

Go back to being yourself for a minute or so, then practice being your Hero again.

3 tips that make this method work best:

1. Don't "impersonate" your Hero, just emulate the qualities they have that make them free from stage fright.

2. Use 2 spots on the floor that are six-feet apart; on one spot, you are you. On the other spot, you transform into your Hero.

3. Try different Heroes: if one doesn't seem to make a difference in how you feel, try another and another until you can speak free from stage fright.

This is not "fake it until you make it" because the Hero Process literally rewires neural connections in your brain to short circuit stage fright and build new neural connections for calm confidence about public speaking. Remember - you are emulating, not imitating.

Fear of Public Speaking Won't Vanish With Memorization Says Training Consultant

If you want to overcome your fear of speaking in public, learn a lesson from Winston Churchill. Long before he became prime minister of the United Kingdom, Churchill tried to overcome his public speaking jitters by writing out and memorizing his speeches.

Until one day, while standing before the British Parliament, reciting his speech from memory, Churchill's memory took a vacation. Churchill searched his memory for a helpful marker to guide him on his voyage. He found none.

So, Churchill did what most frightened speakers do when they forget their memorized lines. He repeated his last sentence. As his listener's faces turned pale in alarm, Churchill's face turned scarlet. He stood alone for a few more moments, struggling to recall the phrases he had committed to memory, any of them. Then, in utter humiliation, and defeat, he sat down.

From that day until his death in 1965, Churchill delivered hundreds of speeches, many of them remembered to this day, but not a single one of them delivered from memory.

The secret to overcoming fear of public speaking is to memorize what you want to say, not how you are going to say it. Don't memorize your talk word for word. Instead memorize ideas and concepts.

Start by creating a simple outline of your talk, and commit that to memory. A simple outline includes a beginning, a middle and an end. Give each of those segments a title that's easy to remember when you're on stage or at the front of the boardroom.

If you must memorize anything, memorize a few elegant or compelling ways of expressing a fact, idea or opinion. You should also know where you are going to end, so you recognize the mileposts when you get there.

The greatest advantage to not memorizing your speeches is that your speeches become more memorable. When you speak from your heart and not from your memory, your audience notices. You become, as dale Carnegie puts it, "more alive, more effective, more human."

Fear Free Public Speaking

The Major problem that most people facing when comes to public speaking is the unnecessary stress created from their fears such as fear of loss, fear of the unknown, fear of embarrassment, fear of losing faces... these are the major causes of all the needless pressures that hinders their performances, be it a toss over the dinner table, business presentation or large scale social events. So how shall you get rid of all these pointless tensions and make a fear free public speaking?

Here are some quick tips for you.

1. Be prepared
Do you remember President Abraham Lincoln and all his famous addresses such as the Gettysburg's address? His has been honored to be one of the best public speaker in the history and his speech touches thousands and millions of souls even after he's dead for so many years. He said "If I have 8 hours to chop down a tree, I would spent the first 6 hours sharpen my axe." This has shown that how important the preparation means. Of course, you would never be him and he's long gone. One good way to prepare yourself is keep practicing your speech in front of a mirror until you are confident enough to go for the real thing. Remember, practices makes perfect!

2. Be early
Present yourself at least an hour earlier at the venue where you suppose to deliver your speech. This will give you a great opportunity to control the ground, practice your speech and getting along with this "hostile" environment.

3. Be Friendly
Greet, talk and befriend with everyone in the room. This is a sure way to quickly eliminate your anxiety and fears; also you make new friends.

4. Be Funny
Of course, not asking you to try anything funny or talking bad about yourself, but don't you agree that when you share your bloopers with the audiences, all your fear will be gone immediately? But please don't overdo it.

5. Be honest
Speak with your heart, you cannot share or deliver something that your heart doesn't feel. People will pick up your sincerity and will react spontaneously to what you say. This technique not only is the best way to eliminate your fears and anxiety, it is also the best way to deliver your speech effectively!

Lastly, public speaking is not always a horrible thing. In fact, it is a wonderful thing. If you master what I have just shared with you up there, you will be surprise how simple and easy it is, to speak in front of others. Now! One thing I feel I should talk about now is one thing I hate talking about now.. is my insecurity. This insecurity has influenced my life in a big way. I ignore them most of the time, but God has made me look at them now because He wants to heal them. Usually I wear contacts but then I miscounted and ran out and now am wearing glasses. Look. That is what I have problems with. I feel really insecure. I like my face, but when I put on glasses everything changes. It's crazy. I suddenly think I'm ugly. I have a hard time seeing myself in the mirror. God is bringing this up in my life. I hate talking about it which is why I'm talking about it now, heh. I am being healed of this right now. Right now I'm having some financial trouble. And. God is telling me -- "Chelsea, trust in me, not in your bank account". This is hard for me to do. I see numbers in my bank account and I feel "oh no" What if I don't make it this month? God taps me on the shoulder, "What are you doing? Trust me. Trust me." I feel so broken right now. I feel so weak, but somehow God is making me strong through being in me. I'm struggling with praying out loud. Here, my apartment - in internship -- the girls I live with tell me, "Chelsea, you need to start speaking out." I want to, I have a lot to say but because I'm afraid ...

A Secret Weapon to Get Over Fear of Public Speaking

For those with anxiety disorder, the fear of public speaking causes full-blown panic attacks. When I say public speaking, I am not just talking about those rare occasions when you have to give a speech in front of a huge crowd, like at a wedding, convention or funeral. After experiencing their first panic attack, many working people find they can no longer even give a routine presentation or speak up at a staff meeting.

Fear of public speaking, like all forms of anxiety disorder, is strictly all in your head. Initially something scared you and a nasty piece of doubt was generated and planted in your subconscious. Every time you are faced with circumstances where you have to speak in front of a crowd, the doubt creeps into your mind and spreads like a virus, crippling your self-confidence and generating anxiety until you reach complete panic. Next thing you know, you're hyperventilating into a paper bag.

There are all kinds of fabulous tips to overcome fear of public speaking using distraction (there's the famous one of imagining everyone naked). But this will probably not work for you if you have anxiety disorder. Because those tips are for regular people!

Anxiety sufferers are usually under the impression that normal folks go through their lives cool and totally unflappable like James Bond. Guess what? Regular people get nervous when they have to give a speech. They just don't show it.

In your case, however, you had one panic attack and then made yourself believe the notion that speaking up in front of people will give you another panic attack. And what you believe comes true every time. This is good news, because all you need is to have a few positive public-speaking experiences and your old belief will be gone forever, replaced by a new one that thinks public speaking is fun.

I am not going to give you distraction tips because you need full concentration while giving a speech.

Begin by giving a simple presentation in front of a small group of close friends or loved ones. Tell them that you are doing this to get over your fear of public speaking and you need their love and support. Tell them to cheer with enthusiasm and accept their love without guilt or false modesty. Pick a topic you are interested in and prepare for this event by reading up on public speaking tips (there are tons on the internet).

As you do this presentation, make sure you become aware of how great it feels when your initial anxiety or shyness turns into excitement (this will happen if your group is really cheering you on). This is the most important part of all, because this is how seasoned speech-givers end up making a great speech. They use the energy provided by their nervousness and turn it into passion and excitement.

Again, you have to get over the idea that great public speakers are too cool to feel even a drop of anxiety. They feel LOTS of anxiety, but they welcome it because they know how to tame it and ride it, like a wild horse. This is the essence of cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety: to let you know that anxiety is a normal self-protective reaction provided by Mother Nature herself, and that you can use it to enhance your life.

Panic attack tips like deep breathing or hyperventilating into a paper bag are fine, and they actually do wonders to calm you down before the speech. But the panic you feel while you are on stage will not be controllable unless you make the major mental shift of regarding the panic as your friend and ally in helping you give an unforgettable speech.

As with every magic cure for panic attacks, the key is to think the very opposite of what you normally think. Next time you're faced with speaking to a group, repeat over and over again, "Dear God, please let the anxiety come or I'm going to totally bore everyone!!" Even if you don't believe it at first, repetition is the key to success. You can make up your own phrases to change your nervousness into excitement, but keep saying it until you believe it.

Why we fear speaking

The Book of Lists years ago had speaking to a group of people as the number one fear in life - well ahead of death. Subsequent studies have tended to confirm that if not the top fear, it is always very close to the top. Why does speaking to a group of people cause us so much stress?

The simple answer is acute embarrassment.

We fear making a complete and utter fool of ourselves in front of friends, work colleagues and other people that matter in our lives, and unfortunately we have powerful emotional memories of just that level of embarrassment happening in our past. These anchored memories are then dramatically recalled and reinforced every time we even think about speaking in public.

But the memories are not necessarily about speaking in public. These emotional anchors link us to memories of being embarrassed by enthusiastic parents or grandparents in front of their friends, stammering though reading allowed in school to giggles and derision, forgetting our lines in a school play, and our faltering, stuttering, badly prepared first public speaking disasters. With no positive experiences to balance this out, the fear can reach phobic levels where often some form of therapeutic help is necessary.

What are the consequences of this fear?

This fear leads us to a conclusion that we are "not good enough." People start to develop a whole series of alibis to avoid the trauma of speaking in public. "I've nothing valuable to say," or "My life is pretty boring," or "I don't have an experience in this," or "It's all been said already," etc. Those verbal and internal scripts that constantly put us down are not true, they are simply a survival mechanism to prevent us being put into a position of having to speak in public.

Unfortunately one of the worst side effects of this process is that people "keep their heads down" at work, disempowering themselves by never standing to speak, avoiding promotion and therefore sabotaging their careers. This in turn leads to further self sabotage and negative scripts to justify not progressing at work and in life. It is terrible vicious circle all build on the fear of speaking in public.

How do you overcome this Fear?

There is no shortage of advice on overcoming fear of speaking but my big concern is that a great deal of the advice will make the problem worse. Often the primary advice is to be well prepared and to practice. Nothing wrong in principle but these are not the first things to do. If people follow that advice alone they will build the fear instead of taking it away, because it doesn't overcome the problem of self confidence - the fear that you are going to make a fool of yourself.

The key to overcoming fear of public speaking is in the content of the speech not the preparation and delivery.

1. Speak from Experience

The number one rule for overcoming Fear of speaking in public is to speak from experience, speak on a topic about which you have earned the right to speak. If you speak about something you know well, if you speak on a topic about which you feel passionate then you are going to feel far more confident. Make a list of all the things you have experience in. Your passions, your achievements, your lessons in life, your work experience, your education and training, your hobbies and interests, your family and travel experiences etc.

2. Become a Storyteller

Develop stories about your experiences in life and in work. Start getting into the habit of telling stories to friends and colleagues socially or at work. Listen to any professional speaker and you will notice that their speeches are filled with stories. Stories are easy for us to remember as speakers and easy for the audience to remember. Write out your best stories making sure they all have a clear message. Buy some books of short stories and fables and learn how the masters construct entertaining stories.

3. Give your Speech a Clear Purpose

When you start writing your speech, begin with a clear and definite purpose. Why are you delivering this speech? What exactly do you want to achieve with it? What are the audience expecting from it? The audience will not be able to remember more than one clear message especially if there are lots of other speeches. Keep your speech very focused and write out your purpose in a single sentence as your primary message. State up front the purpose so that the audience knows what to expect and finish with the purpose and a call to action - what do you want the audience to do now. Give them a clear reason for having listened to you. The by product of this is that you are seen to be a leader. All great speeches have a clear and definite purpose, so should yours.

4. Stick to Three or Four Supporting Points

The biggest mistake people make is to ramble on and on with far too much content. One main message - your purpose - supported by three or four points all illustrated by interesting facts and stories and you have a winning speech. It's not too much to remember and it's easy for the audience to recall. They will thank you for the clarity and you will overcome your fear because it is easy to remember and deliver. People do not need to hear everything, give them the key points and let them come to you for more detail.

Fear of Public Speaking - 10 Tips For Success

A great public speaking statistic was once made on national TV by Jerry Seinfeld, from the TV show Seinfeld, who found a poll that said that the number one fear for Americans was public speaking. Death was at number five. With this he joked that "...at a funeral, people are five times more likely to want to be in the casket than giving the eulogy."

Now forgiving the statistical error Jerry made, public speaking is actually ranked at the top fear of many people, Americans included. From my own personal history, as well as some of the many tips I was able to find online, here are 10 tips for eliminating public speaking fears.

1. Practice right before you go to bed. My best tip to myself by far. Trying to memorize and practice what I have to say right before I go to bed really helps. On a scientific level, your brain works at night and whatever you process last (right before bedtime) sub-consciously becomes more familiar to you the next day! This tip has helped me tremendously, especially for presentations.

2. Be prepared. I envy people who can go up and stir the crowd up without any practice beforehand. But until I get there, knowing the material and speaking with authority on that particular subjects projects confidence, which in turn makes you less nervous while your up on center stage.

3. Use bullet points and do not memorize word for word. If you try to memorize your entire speech or presentation, that will make you more nervous! Instead focusing on memorizing bullet points has helped me since I can be a little more spontaneous, but at the same time, give me direction whenever I feel lost. Trying to memorize what you have to say word for word just makes you think more about what you have to say, which puts more pressure on yourself.

4. As I saw on a shampoo commercial where a guy tells his nervous professor to just imagine him naked to take away his fear of speaking, realize this: whoever your audience is, they want you to succeed. Even if you are very nervous, if you just stand tall you will look 90% confident. The fast heart beat, butterflies, and sweaty palms can't be seen by the audience. In fact, they want to hear a good presentation, and most times, they will like you no matter what.

5. Smile. Smiling makes you happier and makes you more confident. Smile and try to gaze for familiar faces. This allows you to make a positive connection with your audience and takes your mind of of the "I can't do this" thoughts.

6. Be enthusiastic. Even if its a boring business meeting or a boring school presentation, saying your part with fake enthusiasm will rub off...to yourself! Its like smiling except it you can do it for the entire duration.

7. Eat a lot of yogurt and nuts. Some natural chemical inside yogurts and nuts helps to calm you down. I find this works better than a glass of water, and just the fact of me eating it makes me psychologically more confident in myself.

8. Breathe. But don't just breathe, breathe until your lungs are full. Make sure to get enough oxygen inside of you just in case you run into the good old shortness of breath. Rapid breathing is one of my main problems when I am in a public speaking setting, so I always make sure to take a couple big breaths right before I start talking.

9. Project a success image into your head right before you begin talking. I usually like to project myself confidently presenting to my audience, and when the time comes for me to begin, I will follow my projections to a T.

10. As the famous A.I. once said, "Practice? Practice? You wanna talk about Practice?" Yes, practice by yourself talking into an imaginary audience, practice to your roommates, your parents, siblings, friends, or even your dog. Practice puts the motion inside your brain, and when the actual time for your speech comes, your brain will already know what to say.

Of course, the best way to overcome your fear of public speaking is through public speaking classes. It is pretty much practice, just in a real setting. There are also many different self-help programs that aim to give you confidence and help you develop techniques to overcome anxiety and panic.

Top 7 Tips for Conquering Public Speaking Fear

We've all heard about how people's number fear is public speaking. The comedian Jerry Seinfeld had this to say on the fear of public speaking:

"The number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Number two. That means most people would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy".

Although the line is funny, to me it just doesn't seem right. People's number one fear is still public speaking.

So I decided to come up with a few tips that might help people conquer the public speaking fear. Here's my Top 7 Tips that I've put together in order to help reduce that top spot ranking:

1) Know you subject. If you're doing public speaking (whether it's a presentation or a talk) and it's at work you already know the subject. That means you'll know what you have to say. You're ahead of the game. Just make sure you know how long you're expected to talk for.

It might also be useful to get clear about what the point or objective of your speech is. Is it to gain new clients. To inform your department about what you're team has achieved in the last quarter? This will really help you when it comes to...

2) Structuring. Just like a story your speech needs a beginning, a middle and an end.

Try not to digress from your speech too much. Only tell people the things that are relevant to the aim of your talk (as discussed in the previous tip).

3) Practice. Make sure you know what you're going to say when you do your public speaking. You don't have to worry about it being word for word, in fact it's probably best if it isn't that way.

Have your main speech points written out, and talk them through out loud. Practicing out loud is very important as you get used to saying the words and hearing yourself speak.

Get yourself along to your local Toastmasters club. They can offer friendly and invaluable feedback on what you're doing. You never know you might end up enjoying the experience and becoming a member!

4) Breathe. You're thinking: "Breathe? Eh? I breathe all the time". True, but you have to remember to breath properly before you do your speech. Try to take some slow deep breaths down in your stomach. When we get nervous or anxious we tend to breath shallow breaths in our chests. Breathing slowly will help to calm your public speaking nerves.

5) Cue Cards. If you're reading your speech off cue cards or a presentation of some sort, then make sure you're familiar with it enough to look up and engage your audience. There's nothing worse than watching a speaker with his head buried in his notes delivering his speech to the floor. Glance up and take in the whole room.

If your notes are printed out hard copy and you're concerned that they may shake put them somewhere where you can easily access them. Like on a lectern. (Beware of open windows!)

6) Your listeners. Remember that everyone in the room is there wanting you to succeed. No-one wants you to fail. This isn't open mike night at The Comedy Store, it's public speaking.

People have come to hear what you have to say. If you have an opportunity to chat to some of them before-hand you'll realize that they are just people and not a baying mob.

7) Humor. If you're not naturally humorous or good with a joke, then leave this section well alone. The last thing you need is a groan at a joke delivered badly. It could knock your confidence. If you're not too good with humor, don't worry as you're in good company. Speakers like Tony Robbins don't use humor, but he is no less engaging.

However, if humor is your strong point then go ahead and sprinkle a couple of anecdotes into your speech. Don't go for laughs every minute, you're not a comedian so why pressure yourself? But having the odd laugh here and there can make people more interested in what you have to say. Humor can make parts of your speech easier to understand.

Is it really possible to overcome the fear of speaking, public presentation anxiety and learn to panic no more when in front of an audience?

Let's admit it: Most of us dread the thought of speaking before others. Some people have even ranked their fear of speaking, public presentation anxiety and the very thought of being in front of others above their fear of death! However you might feel about it yourself, there are good reasons why you should be interested in public speaking.

It is pretty safe to say that public speaking is a skill that everyone needs. Yes, sooner or later, you may have to face an audience. You may be called on to teach a class of co-workers, pitch a proposal to a client, or explain a financial report to managers.

Actually, speaking skills are essential in a wide range of jobs, including journalism, management, public relations, sales and marketing.

What, though, if your fear of speaking, public presentations etc is so intense and relentless, that you choose your career so that you can eliminate all the chances of you having to step in front of an audience? Well, what about a job interview? Being able to speak well on a job interview may mean the difference between getting hired or not. On the job itself, your ability to express yourself can work in your favour. It may even mean a better job, higher pay, or at least more respect.

Learning good speaking skills can thus benefit you in a variety of ways. Even so, you may still feel anxious at the thought of getting up before an audience. Is there something you can do to overcome your anxiety? Yes, there is.

Tips for anxiety free public speaking:

Don't be brilliant:

You don't have to be brilliant or perfect to succeed! The essence of public speaking is this: give your audience something of value. In other words, concentrate on the message, not on yourself or your own anxieties.

Talk, don't perform:

Your speech should not be a performance. Rather, it should be a conversation. The more conversational your approach, the more relaxed you will be. Try to connect with your audience, not as a mass, but as individuals. Show a real "personal interest" in your audience, and speak the way you normally talk. The way to do this is not to speak to the audience! Instead; talk some time to a single person in the audience. Choose someone who looks friendly. Then, turn to another person and tell another thought to this person.

They don't want you to fail:

A common reason for anxiety is fear of embarrassment or of being judged by your audience. Luckily the fact is that audiences tend to want you to succeed, not fail! They are on your side!

Nervousness is not all bad:

Contrary to popular belief nervousness is good for you and your presentation. Why is that? Because a measure of nervousness reflects modesty, which will help keep you from becoming overconfident. Many feel that a little nervous energy actually makes them perform better.

Talk, don't read:

Use outline instead of written talk. That way it's easier to maintain eye contact, and we speak more naturally and sound more conversational when we use an outline instead of writing things out word for word.

Be human:

Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. You just have to try your best and if, or rather when, the mistake happens -take it easy; it can even work for your benefit: audience likes you even more after you have shown this human side and made that mistake. For sure a mistake or two does not make you less likable.

Practise man practise:

Of course, there is no substitute for experience and lots of practice. Prepare your speech far enough in advance so that you have enough time to practice. Talk it to someone. Not just to yourself, but to a friend, spouse, and a colleague.

Apply these skills. At least try them, and you will see that you can beat that fear of speaking, public presentation anxiety and possibly any social anxiety. And you will panic no more!

Some people are more afraid of speaking in public than they are of sustaining serious injury or dying. Very few people rarely get nervous when they are required to make a speech. Even the very best speakers get butterflies before giving a presentation. Regardless as to what you feel before speaking, you can overcome your fears, remain calm and speak with confidence. You can do this by understanding the physiology of fear as it is outlined below.

The Physiology of Fear; There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a little nervous before speaking in public. In fact, a little nervousness keeps you "on your toes". Nevertheless, you may experience a little anxiety when speaking to a potential business partner or a group of people interested in what you have to offer. Fear becomes problematic when it has a negative impact on the quality of your presentation.

Fear of speaking is truly unnecessary. So, before you have an anxiety attack, you must learn how to manage the symptoms of fear. You may experience any or all of the following:

· Knotted or queasy stomach

· Sweating

· Rapid Heart Beat

· Dry Mouth

· Trembling Legs and Hands

· Rapid Breathing

· Dizziness

These are simply the result of the sympathetic nervous system pumping adrenaline into the body preparing it for the "fight response". Sensing danger, the body pumps you up to face it. Your fear when speaking is that of making a mistake. What you must realize is that your fear will subside naturally and in short order. The adrenaline injected into the body by the nervous system compensates and calms the body down. The time needed to return to normal depends on the severity of the reaction. Fortunately, you can regulate its severity. Once you begin speaking, your mind will begin to concentrate on your speech, allaying your fears. You can clearly see that fear about speaking in public is simply the result of thinking that is distorted by biochemistry.

Some people are just wired to be shy. Some are might have grown up in an environment where speaking was not encouraged. You know the old adage in some homes, you are to "be seen but not heard". And yet, some people may have never been put in a position where they were required to speak. The bottom line is that these deficiencies cause problems when it comes to giving speeches. Please be mindful that any psychological, social, or biological influences can be overcome by applying corrective procedures. For now, you know how fear is produced.
